When the only tool you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. ~Maslow
Many of you have probably seen this quote or a variation of it at some point in your life. If this is the first time you've read it, my hope is that it provides you with food for thought. Quotes are like mini teaching stories that allow the reader to find meaning and relevance from where they stand around the circle of this vast and wondrous world.
You might be curious has to how this quote has anything to do with wellness and massage. All too often we look at challenges in our lives from one limited viewpoint. The challenges may be related to our physical, emotional, or spiritual health, our relationships, our work or any domain that impacts our living. When we are out of balance in any way, our entire system is affected and as a result that imbalance causes stress and disharmony. If we use only one tool to affect change, we limit the possibilities that can help us heal and our beliefs, views, and opinions become our hammer while we and those around us become the nails. We need to cultivate awareness from both the broad viewpoint of an eagle AND the detail and minutiae of a mouse. The good news!!! Awareness creates movement and movement supports change. When we begin to shift our way of viewing the world to encompass possibilities and begin to loosen our grip on the hammer, we can facilitate change from with-in which then radiates with-out. In combination, this way of "being" in the world can guide us toward the development of our individual tool belts.
You might consider your massage therapist as a carpenter of sorts. One who uses a variety of tools to help you develop your individual tool belt and loosen your grip on the hammer.
Begin your day with the practice of honoring vision AND minutiae, open your eyes and heart, and life will become a vast hardware store.
